Fujioka City, located in the southern part of Gunma Prefecture, is another southernmost town of Onishi. The town has a history of flourishing due to the production of “Sanbaseki,” a stone with a beautiful hue, and traces of this can still be seen in the large shopping street. The “Onishi Festival,” held once a year in summer, features five floats that compete with each other to perform a musical performance, and is said to be the most powerful festival music in the Kanto region.

The unique name “Onishi” comes from the fact that when Kobo Daishi fought with an evil demon a long time ago, the demon threw a large stone that remained on the bank of the river, where people revered the place and built a shrine. This is known to local residents as the “Oni Densetsu” (legend of the demons).

Although surrounded by mountains and rich in nature, the central city center is home to the city hall branch office, nursery schools, schools, convenience stores, and other facilities, making it a very convenient area in which to live.
